INFORMATION FOR COACHES


Fall 2021 Coaching Clinics - AYSO now requires age appropriate certification for all coaches and assistant coaches.

For new coaches and assistant coaches looking to learn coaching techniques or returning coaches and assistant coaches looking to get certified at the correct age level, Palos Verdes AYSO (Region 10), in coordination with surrounding AYSO regions, will be offering age appropriate classes. Details of these class offerings are below:

3 Steps to become an AYSO Coach:

  1. Complete a Volunteer Profile in Sports Connect (formerly BlueSombrero) which must be done each year.
  2. Complete a one-time requirement of AYSO’s Safe Haven course, the CDC HEADS UP Concussion Training course, and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest online course that are in AYSOU
  3. Complete age-specific AYSO Coaches Training:

Step 1

  1. Register as an AYSO Volunteer in Region 10 in SportsConnect (formerly Blue Sombrero), here: https://ayso.bluesombrero.com/Default.aspx?tabid=800401

  2. Create an account or login to your existing account. 

  3. Click on the Volunteer Button on the left, then click on FIND VOLUNTEER ROLES

  4. Find the 2021 FALL season and click on SELECT on HEAD COACH, then SIGN UP, then click CONTINUE

  5. Sign the waivers and pledge and click CONTINUE

  6. Note that it is an AYSO requirement to complete the volunteer form every year.

Step 2

All volunteers must take these 3 courses. If completed previously, you do not need to take them again. 
 
Log into your Sports Connect account at https://ayso.bluesombrero.com/Default.aspx?tabid=800401 and click on the AYSOU tab (may need to log in again) or go directly to https://aysou.org. If it is your first time registering on Sports Connect, you may need to wait 24 hours for your login information to be transferred to AYSOU. Click on ONLINE COURSES, open the Safe Haven Courses and take:
  1. AYSO’s Safe Haven. This will take about 40 minutes.

  2. CDC HEADS UP Concussion Training. This will take about 40 minutes.

  3. Sudden Cardiac Arrest online. This will take about 30 minutes.

    Step 3

    All coaches must be certified to coach at each level. To take an online course or sign up to attend in-person courses, go to https://ayso.bluesombrero.com/Default.aspx?tabid=800401 or https://aysou.org just like step 2.
    • For the online portion of the course click on ONLINE COURSES, then OPEN next to Coaching Courses, then pick the appropriate age to complete the online training.
    • If your age group requires an In-Person course, then you will need to click the IN-PERSON COURSE tab, click OPEN next to Coach Instructor Led Courses, then pick the appropriate age and click OPEN, then click SESSIONS to find the course you would like to attend. You must click REGISTER and read the directions carefully and make sure you have completed all required prerequisites.

     

    6U & 8U (Online only)
    Required training classes for the 6U and 8U age groups are held online at AYSO's online training resource at https://aysou.org under the "ONLINE COURSES" tab. You will need to use the login you created when registering yourself as a volunteer on https://ayso.bluesombrero.com/region10.

    10U & 12U (Online and Field)
    Required training classes for the 10U and 12U age groups are held online at AYSO's online training resource at https://aysou.org under the "ONLINE COURSES" tab. You will need to use the login you created when registering yourself as a volunteer on https://ayso.bluesombrero.com/region10.

    In addition, PV AYSO will be holding Field Sessions for the 10U to 12U age groups on Saturday, August 21. These field sessions are MANDATORY FOR ALL COACHES SEEKING CERTIFICATION.

    10U (Field Session Only) - Register with Division Coordinator

    August 21, 2021 @ 9AM to 11:00AM at Highridge Park (Suggested Make Up session on Saturday, August 28 in Long Beach. Check https://aysou.org for details and more options)

    12U (Field Session Only) - Register on AYSOU

    August 21, 2021 @ 8AM to 11:00AM at Highridge Park


    Intermediate

    AYSO Area 1F will host an Intermediate Coaches session on August 27 and 28. This course requires pre-registration at https://aysou.org. Specific times and addresses can be found during registration.

     

    Advanced

    IMPORTANT
    If any of these courses don't fit into your schedule the best resource is to check https://aysou.org for more options/dates to find appropriate age-level classes that best meet your needs in another Area. 

     

    Common Problems:

    If you cannot log in to AYSOU an view courses after registering in SportsConnect:

    • Check that you have electronically accepted and submitted your volunteer application in SportsConnect.
    • Check that you have "activated" your AYSOU account by accessing AYSOU from within SportsConnect:
      • Log in to our SportsConnect account
      • On the left hand side click on HOME
      • This will take you back to Region 10's SportsConnect website.
      • Click on the AYSOU tab.
      • Click on LOGIN to log in.

    Game Card Template. - Coaches can type, save, and print game day Game Cards to hand to the referees.

    Referee Guidelines. - Coaches should print Referee Guidelines for their age group as a reference to common age appropriate rules and keep these guidelines with them.

    Playoff Participation Policy. - Coaches should be aware that teams will only be invited to play in the end-of-season playoffs if their team has refereed enough games.

     


     

    Mismatched Game Guide. - This informative guide put together by Jodi Council, our former Director of Coaching, is must reading for all AYSO coaches. It provides tips on how coaches can handle games that are one-sided/lopsided in ways that are both encouraging and instructive for the players.
